Tonight, I saw
fingers tracing my snow-angels
someone followed me through ivory boughs
and the crackle of cold underfoot.
     Or was I following her?

that lantern-lit night long ago
contained a snowstorm.
I will never forget
how deeply you bowed to the demons
that had come to chill you before they feasted
upon the lips that touched mine
     one last time.

Here is beauty, you said.
Here I will sleep, to keep my body cold.
To arrest my lashes with frost,
To enclose my elbows and thighs in purest white.

"You have no right to take our warmth,
no right to take this life!"
I cried for us both,
as the night starved our eyes.
     You kept your silence.

This eternity of blue veins,
Of reddened lips and heart stopped,
Was this what beauty meant to you?

Tonight
In the winter you loved,
the one that stole you below the seeds of haru
     I carry fire.
Snowflakes die as they dance closer to the glow.

As you laid down to sleep
In your wonderland of white,
You whispered one last thing:
Take the memory of spring from me.
That is one thing I cannot cage in ice.
Yuki-onna is the Japanese snow woman.
Haru means spring.

You promised me they would not take you.
I trusted you.
